Rugby Post Match Update

Well it was a mixed morning at Causeway Bay today. First up were the U16s against the combined Causeway Bay/Aberdeen/Tai Po team. We were bigger than them and in the early exchanges got all the possession and after 15 minutes, we were 12-0 up after keeping them in their own 22 for most of the time. However, the combined team began to win some ball and they spread it well to some quick backs and they ran in some good tries, helped by our poor tackling. This left us 23-17 down at the break. Unfortunately we continued to miss some tackles in the second half and we ended up on the end of a 45-22 beating. This is a team, where most of the boys haven’t played before this year and there was lots to like about our performance when in attack, but Gunny and the coaches will have to be working on the defence work before our next match.

Next up were the U19s and we were far to strong for the combined team. We were 54-7 up at half time and with them picking up a few injuries as they tired we called an end to it there, mixed the sides up and played a friendly in the second half. We were superior to them in all areas, although they did have some pace in the backs as we saw when one lad broke away for a length of the pitch try, after we missed a tackle. The boys enjoyed themselves and it was a good run out.

Our problems with finding a training pitch continue. The USD won’t give us a booking at the Kowloon pitch due to rules and red tape, so the pitch will sit unused and next week we are back to the Police Club. Two thirds of the pitch is available for training but there is only limited flood lighting, however hopefully there will be enough ambient light around for us to have a reasonable session till the new lights are up and running in early December.

However there is some good news, we have managed to enter a team in the winter touch league, which is played on a Friday night in Happy Valley. This is a mixed league, but it is mainly for our girls to get a run out. We have been getting some good numbers of girls at training but they are spread over all the age groups and so we can’t enter the girls leagues, as we don’t have quite enough for any particular age group and many are not really ready for full on matches. Although, we may go for 7s after Christmas, if the touch goes well. So if anyone fancies a change from Wanchai or Lan Kwai Fong on a Friday night, the girls will be playing touch between 8 and 9.30pm in the Valley and I am sure they would appreciate some support and the kiosk sells cold beers. We will be playing on 7/11, 21/11, 28/11 and 5/12. Thereafter it is the finals.

Next weekend there are no games for the boys, but we have two matches on Sunday 16 November, which I will tell you about nearer the time.
