    Updates from Rugby

We had two great results last weekend, even though in a way things were far from perfect.

Firstly the U16s had 18 players, of whom at least 8 were having their first game. The lads had never played together and it was not surprising that we were quickly 17 – 0 down, but the lads dug in and the training they have been getting soon paid dividends, we fought back to 17 – 17, but were denied victory in the last few minutes when East Kowloon scored a breakaway try. It was a very competitive game and the boys wouldn’t ’t meet many bigger and stronger teams all season. For us the important thing was that the boys enjoyed themselves. One of our young wingers scored a try in his first ever game which was a great delight to behold. My concerns and worries over numbers have temporarily been abated. We had two ex-TM Boys Home lads playing, one of whom looks strong. With a few more boys expecting to join us in the next few weeks I am sure the U16s will have a competitive season.

Unfortunately the U19s opposition, also east Kowloon, only had 10 players. However we lent them five and had a really competitive, hard hit out. It was a great way to start the season for us. We turned up having 25 lads and this is going to be a strong competition for a place in the starting line-up. Selection for Gunny and Tank will not be easy. There were plenty of tries, most of them were from the lads we had lent them. We got a 20 -0 victory as far as the league is concerned as they gave us a walkover, but promised us a full 15-a-side game later in the season, which we will take them up on.

Attached are pictures of the U16s and the U19s.

Next week we will have two more games at Tin Siu Wai again on Sunday October 12 –

    • 2.15 pm U16s v HKFC 3

    • 3.30pm U19s v DBP

Discovery Bay Pirates is a strong team and that should be a really good game if you can make it up to the Unions pitch in Tin Siu Wai and I’m sure the U16s will also do well.

Lastly a bit of disappointing news, with the student protests tying up many of the Breakthrough volunteers and some of the boxers we have had to postpone the boxing fund raiser with Marvin Hagler, till early 2015. A real disappointment but I am sure when it is held it will be a cracking night and will also help us replenish the coffers.

All the best and if you can make it up to support the lads you will see some good rugby.
