    Rugby Weekly Update

Breakthrough girls U16 Rugby Team with our coach Pun Pun and OB director Steve

Breakthrough Rugby girls U16 team with Tai Po girls rugby team.
It was just the girls U16 in action this week with a friendly sevens run out against the girls from Tai Po. The Breakthrough girls were much bigger than their opposition, but the smaller girls from Tai Po were not intimidated and tackled really well. Coupled with their speed round the pitch, we lost the first game by 6 tries to nil. This was our first game and at times it seemed that the girls thought they were still playing touch. Anyway Pun Pun, our coach, helped them learn from the experience and after a short break they played a second game. This time round the Breakthrough girls played much better, standing closer together, tackling and keeping their line and we only lost two tries to one.

This was for most of the girls their first experience of a full contact match, so they did really well and as we have entered a U16 team in the coming girl’s U16 7-a-side tournament it was a much needed practice. Most importantly everyone had a lot of fun. Above are a couple of photos.

Next week we have training on Wednesday and then next Sunday, 1 February 2015, we have two games. First up are the U16s in a long awaited return to the Police Club. They kick off at 1pm against HKFC3. This will be a tough match, but the boys are learning all the time and I am sure a good win is not far away. Then the second game is the U19s against Tigers. They are playing next door at Tai Hang Tung, kicking off at 4.15pm. Tigers are always tough opposition so another good game is expected. I hope some of you can get down to watch one or both of the games.

On Saturday, 7 February, 20 odd boys and girls have volunteered to help the HK Federation of Youth Groups, with their elderly day in Wong Tai Sin. The HKFYG have arranged an end of year banquet for several groups of needy elderly people and the boys will be helping out. This year we have been encouraging the rugby lads to give something back to the community and not just “receive”. The lads have been good about this and this is not the first time we have taken part in something like this, although previously not in such numbers. Ivan is doing a grand job, working with HKFYG, organising them.

Finally this week, I thought you might be interested to hear about another project that is using rugby to help their community. This time it is with gang violence in Venezuela. The participants are a bit older and probably more hard core (just a tad anyway) but nonetheless the principles are the same.
