    Rugby Weekly Update

Yesterday the weather was good and we managed to have our Old Boys game followed by our awards evening.

The current Breakthrough lads were keen to avenge last year's defeat and being better organised, fitter and used to playing together as a team, they quickly took the lead and never looked back, running out the winners 51 - 26. The match started with a haka from the old boys, who clearly had not forgotten Sean Fitzpatrick's lessons, but the Breakthrough lads faced it down and the match got underway. The game was played in great spirit and well handled by Russ Harding.

After the game I presented the Tarrant Trophy to the Breakthrough Boys and a picture of the presentation and a picture of the two teams with the cup is attached.

Afterwards it was off to the Police Club for the dinner and awards. During dinner we held the new training shirt design competition and design number 6 won easily. A gift voucher was presented to the winner, Fung Chi Hin and next season, we will be training in his design. We then gave out the awards for this last season. The Blair Abbiss Memorial Trophy for our overall player of the year, which is awarded for on and off the field ability and commitment was presented by Justin Abbiss to Chan Ka Chun and a photo is attached. The full list of winners was:

    • U16 Most Improved Player – Gurung Ashwin

    • U16 Best Player – Fung Pak Ho

    • Most Improved Girl Player – Leung Pui Kwan

    • Best Girl Player – Law Yin Ting

    • U19 Most Improved Player - Chung Ka Hin

    • U19 Best Player – Chung Shun Hong

    • Best Tourist – Wong Shun Ming

    • Blair Abbiss Cup – Chan Ka Chun

A picture of all the winners with their trophies is below along with another one of all the kids. The evening finished with the boys presenting me with a cake for father’s day, which I was very proud to receive.

As I have said before in these newsletters this was probably our most successful season to date in terms of lads who have become policemen, lads who got representative honours and success in various leagues and tournaments we have entered. So it was nice to see some of our police lads attend the dinner last night, along with Kei On, one of our original social workers, who now works with kids with drug problems. The three boys who are just back from Portugal will be off on further travels in July. They have been selected by the Union to go to New Zealand for a week’s training with the Chiefs academy, which will no doubt be a real eye opener for them.

Our season continues with a day trip next Saturday to Macau. We have entered a team in the Macau 10s competition, which should be great fun. Hopefully Gunny, Ivan, Tank and I can keep the lads out of the casinos!!!
