Rugby Update

Last Sunday we had the U14s in action against Valley and unfortunately they lost 22-14. We have got one or two big lads who are very useful, but we are struggling with numbers, which is a pity. Still this is the first time we have competed at this level for several years and we are still trying to recruit a few more. I don’t want to let this age group drop off again, so we will persevere.

The U19s game was postponed as the Union arranged a Warriors game. Warriors is a Union initiative to bring on the better local U19 players from the smaller clubs and they have been training regularly since the summer. It is intended to take the better players of on a tour in December and as part of the build up to that they are playing the stronger teams in HK. They started last Sunday with a game against Tigers. We had 8 players in the squad and they all got some game time and played well according to my sources. The Warriors did well to win the game, against a strong Tigers team. Obviously with our best players out, we had to postpone our regular league game. Unfortunately an intended training session for the rest with the Portugal team, never came off, as Portugal decided they didn’t need that session.

The girls played a combined team at Tin Siu Wai and unfortunately lost by a couple of tries. However as usual the girls I spoke to really enjoyed the game. They are just so enthusiastic, it is very encouraging.

Ivan and Sures took some of the lads to visit some old people at Tsing Yi last Sunday as well, as we continue to encourage our boys to give something back. They sent me the attached photo and assure me that the old ladies enjoyed their visit.

As everyone knows we are very lucky to receive our main sponsorship from Standard Chartered Bank and their logo is proudly displayed on our shirts. Last week they signed up for another three years and their support helps ensure the continued success of Breakthrough rugby, which it goes without saying we are very grateful for. Attached is a photo taken at the presentation ceremony. We have enjoyed a lot of support from Standard Chartered over the years and the sad passing of Jonah Lomu this week reminded me of his visit to us several years ago, when he was one of their sporting ambassadors. BJ kindly sent me the attached photo and I have some more somewhere around, which if I can locate, I will post next week. Very sad news.
