Rugby Weekly Update
Merry Christmas everyone.
Last weekend the U16s were in action against a combined Tsuen Wan, Tai Po, Causeway Bay team but unfortunately despite all those resources they still couldn’t raise a team and they forfeited giving us a 20 – 0 victory. They did have 8 players so we lent them a few and played a friendly, which everyone enjoyed, so it wasn’t all bad. The U19 2ndXV were next up and with 17 lads away in Manila with the Warriors this was a true test of our strength in depth. We were playing against the same combination and after some tight play we were leading 15-10 at half time. The combined team then drew level before we pulled away for a well-deserved victory with two late tries. There were no conversions and so we won 25-15. Our backs were particularly impressive.
At training tonight I met some of the Junior Warriors who went to the Philippines. They had a good time but lost both games, which was a bit disappointing. The U19 team that went to Singapore won all their games and have qualified for the World U20 World Cup in Zimbabwe next year. Apparently Hang Jai played in all three games, starting in two and was very good. Ken also played in all 3 matches coming off the bench in all three and he was apparently very solid. MK played in the first game and scored a try but then didn’t get on in the next two games. All three will be training hard to get selected for the Africa trip, so let’s hope they all make it.
Well it’s not all turkey and mince pies over the holidays there is the New Year’s Day Colts Rugby Tournament at Football Club. We have one lad in the U16s and the Junior Warriors are all playing, so what better way to see in the New Year with a feast of junior rugby and a chance to see many of the Breakthrough boys in action. The matches are:
Lastly for those of you who like to donate a little to charity at Christmas could I please suggest Breakthrough. As most rugby fans amongst you will know on 6 February 2016, the Highlanders, the reigning Super XV Champions, will be playing Racing 92 from France, who have a host of stars including Dan Carter in their line-up. The tickets are $399 each but until 8 Jan they are available at $299 and I would like to get 40 for the boys and girls. So if anyone would like to donate the price of a ticket or two it would really be appreciated. All donations over $100 are eligible for a tax receipt.
