Rugby Weekly update

Yesterday’s two games were very different. First up in a game marking our return to the police club, were the U16s against HKFC 3. We started really well and streaked into a 7 – 0 lead through a fine try by our speed merchant Ah Hung. However after that it was all downhill, with the boys seemingly forgetting how to tackle. With the Super Bowl today, our coach Gunny, summed it up quite well by saying it felt like he was fielding his offensive line up for the whole game. We eventually lost 70-7 and apart from a couple of the boys, no one put in a decent tackle all game. All rather disappointing and the lads are in for some rigorous tackling practice on Wednesday night.

It was then next door to watch the U19s against DEA II, in what is always a tough fixture. Most of our lads were back from injury and exams, so consequently we were able to field nearly our strongest team. And they were fantastic, playing the best I have seen all season. The forwards were awesome, winning loads of great possession and the backs created space and opportunities for themselves. In defence we tackled well and rucked really hard tacking quite a few turn overs. It was great to watch and we ran out 34 – 5 winners. A fantastic team performance.

This week we have the following:

  • Training on Wednesday night.

  • Our link up with the HKFYG on Saturday, 7 Feb, helping out at their community functions for the old people

  • And on Sunday, 8/2, we have –

  • A fun day against Kowloon Lions for the boys, where we have arranged for Kowloon to join us at the Police Club from 12 to 2pm for some 7-a-side games.

  • The girls also have some 7s action on Sunday. At Tai Hang Tung from 9am to 1pm we have the U19 girls playing in a Union 7s competition; and

  • From 9.30 to 12.30 at Tin Siu Wai we have the U16 girls playing.

This will be a first opportunity for both the girls teams to compete in some competitive tackling rugby action so it should be fun for them (I hope).

Obviously a busy weekend for us next week.
